Interdisciplinary Institute of Innovation (i3)

The Interdisciplinary Institute of Innovation i3 (« i-cube ») was created in 2012. This research unit was developed by bringing together research teams from Mines Paris and Télécom Paris, and a team from École Polytechnique. i3 acquired the status of CNRS joint research unit (UMR 9217) in 2015.

i3 brings together nearly 80 permanent researchers and research professors, 25 engineering, technician and administrative support staff, 15 non-permanent staff, and over 110 PhD students for a total staff of 230.

Research striving for excellence

The Institute develops high-level research combining academic excellence and relevance for the benefit of the research users. Research is often carried out through contracts with companies, organizations or public administrations (€3.9 million in revenue in 2011). The institute also hosts 8 corporate chairs.

Through its research and training activities, i3 plays an active role in addressing the major challenges of today: the circulation of information, health, innovation, energy, and sustainable development technologies.

The Institute is also engaged in a dialogue with companies, organizations and public authorities via innovative platforms for dialogue, such as the Observatory for Competitiveness Clusters, the Observatory for Responsible Innovation and the EU Energy Policy Blog.

The Institute was assessed by the Hcéres in 2017.

The Economics and Social Sciences Department at Télécom Paris is an integral part of the laboratory.
