Tiphaine Viard announces that the ANR (French Research National Agency) has selected the project « CHAI » for funding for the next three years under the « young researchers » instrument!

Said Tiphaine Viard: « In the face of heterogeneous and conflicting information around AI, our goal is to CHart Artificial Intelligence: provide a relational and conceptual map that sheds light on the personal and institutional relationships, how they change over time, and how they shape AI in society. Our wish is to offer analytical and methodological tools to navigate this conceptual space, to be used by researchers, policymakers, and vulnerabilised groups.

– An explorable map of actors, institutions, and how their positions changed over time.
– A set of mathematical tools to identify socio-semantic variations of concepts (do the European Commission and Télécom Paris researchers mean the same thing when they talk about « fairness »?), as well as identifying changes in the structure of relationships over time.
– A deep dive into the ways that people who « make » AI (be it digital labourers, AI scientists…) see their personal trajectories affected by the different discourses around AI, and how it impacts the operationalisation of technical concepts in law.

This is not a small task, with lots of scientific, technical and conceptual difficulties — it is a seemingly fuzzy, fast-evolving space, where disputes for power are not settled, and capturing fine-grained social phenomenae is at the core of our work.

We assembled an interdisciplinary team with Maria Boritchev, Valérie Beaudouin, Thomas Le Goff, PhD, and Winston Maxwell, assembling computational social scientists, sociologists, linguists and law researchers. »
